Year 10 Advice - Organisation&Equipment - Back to School

Hey,

This is continuing on in my Back to School posts. I'm sorry if these do not apply to you but I'm trying to interchange between normal blog posts and these posts.

Today I'm going to talk about how to be Organised in year 10 and what Equipment is best to have.

Organisation

I'm going to start with Organisation which I did touch on in the last Back to School post but I didn't go much into detail.

As I said last time you should get into the habit of doing all homework when it is set. I know this wont be possible every day as some days you will be set more than others but just try to complete it ASAP as it will lower your stress levels and be a lot less hassle.

Also pack your bag the night before as then you will know you have all your homework and books which will save time in the morning especially if you are in a rush. I suggest double checking in the morning because if you have accidentally left a book or piece of homework in your room then you will realise and it will save you from getting in trouble at school. But if you do forget then just tell your teacher at the start of class or before class started because they are going to know if you have came up with a fake excuse and they will be less annoyed. (Of topic I know)

To make it easier you can make lists of what you need to do and their deadlines so if you do have a lot to do you can prioritise.

When it gets closer to exam season make a revision timetable where you will plan out how much time you want revising a certain subject and when. You should give more time to subjects if you struggle at them or if it is close to that exam. Also use post it notes, revision cards, mind maps and revision guides when you are studying.

Equipment

This will vary from school to school but I am going to tell you what I needed for the subjects I took. There is the obvious pens, pencils and ruler. I suggest 3 pens because lets face it you're going to loose one, also have black pens for main writing as they are what you have to use in exams anyway. Pencils and rulers aren't a must have at my school but I always have one anyway. For key words/ information I would use a different coloured pen or a highlighter as it makes studying easier.

Specific subjects and what I needed for them are below:

Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Biology: Calculator (Not needed as much in Biology)
IT: N/A
ART: Nothing for class but at home you will need Paint, brushes, pencils, paper etc.
History: I needed a folder, divider tabs and Polly pockets.
Spanish: English- Spanish dictionary
English: N/A

Rubbers, Glue, Scissors, Notebooks and coloured pencils would also be useful

Obviously it will vary for you but I just thought I would give you an idea of what you might need. Thanks for reading, Love Scarlett x

Keep Holding On

Hey there you beautiful, amazing, spectacular people,

You know someone asked me the other day why I bother writing this blog when hardly any people read it and I had to think about that for a moment. Then I realised I don't write it for anyone to read, I write it for myself this is a place I can write whatever is on my mind and hardly any people know that it is me writing it. People reading is just a bonus really so thank you to anyone who takes the effort to read this blog post.

There's just over 7 billion people on this Earth (that's 7,000,000,000,000 people!) but yet so many people feel so alone. The worst thing about feeling alone is that you can be surrounded by people and still feel it. I want any of you to know that you aren't alone and you never will be, if you ever feel alone and want to talk then you can email me. You can find the details on my Contact me page.

You're not alone. Together we stand. I'll be by your side you know I'll hold your hand. If you keep holding on we can make it though together because together is a wonderful place to be.

Now I'm going to say goodbye but remember that goodbyes are not forever. Goodbyes are not always the end. They simply mean I'll miss you until we meet again.

Year 10 Advice - Tips - Back to school

Hey guys,

So as you may or may not know I have just finished year 10 which is the year you start studying for GCSEs. So after this year I will be in my final year of school- year 11- I will be saying goodbye to a place which has became my home in a way. I have decided to start this back to school series because damn I needed something like this last year and I quite like writing about it. But anyway lets talk about year 10.

Year 10 has been the most stressful year of my life so far. I don't know whether that is because of my mental heath but it is definitely some what how hard you have to work. So here are some tips and advice for any of you out there who may be going into Year 10.

1. Do all homework the day that it is given.

If you complete all your homework the day which it is given to you then you wont have to stress about it all week. Also then if you find it hard you can ask your teacher for some advice.

2. Ask for help

This is sort of leading on from the above but if you find something hard or confusing or you even just need clarification ask the teacher. If you are scared to ask in class stay behind and ask, your teacher isn't going to be annoyed they will probably be glad that you asked as it shows you have initiative and care about your learning.

3. Start studying early

If you are that kid who studies every single day from the start of year 10 then good on you because that is going to get you great results. You don't need to study that much though but I suggest that when you have mock exams you do 5 hours a day for say a month, for class assessments you do about 1-2 hours for a week and for final hours do as much as possible for as long before as possible. If you get mocked for studying so hard then do try to ignore people because you will be the one getting the results you want and having a good career in the future.

4. Do some work experience

In year 10 its not just about doing homework and studying you should start to figure out what you want to do after school. When you get an idea do some work experience in that field and see if you like it, if you don't try something else. Also this will look great when applying for post-16 options.

5. It's not as scary as you think

I remember when I was going into year 10, I was petrified of what was going to come. I only had one friend who had been through that year and she just messed about and truanted all the time so I didn't know what to expect. You will be in classes with people you have never met but that is a good thing as that means you will meet new people. I know it is serious but don't sit there silent all the time. Talk to the people on your table even if its only a hello, how are you, do you know how to do this, its a start. Let them get to know you.

6. Be prepared

Have the equipment that will be needed (I will be making a post on this soon, don't worry), know what lessons you have, know what times you need to be serious, be on time and most of all have fun- this is going to be your last full year at school, make the most out of it.

As for now that's all. I hope you all stay positive throughout whatever s*** you are going through and don't forget to smile.

How to survive the summer holidays

Hey there,

You may think I'm crazy but I HATE the summer holidays. It's just too long to be away from the one place that actually supports me- school. Don't get me wrong, I love having holidays its just seven weeks is too long when your a mentally unstable teenager whose only trusts one person which ironically works at my school. So when I'm writing this it is 7days into my summer holidays and I have 42 days left to go. Yes I'm keeping track. So I'm going to share what I am doing to try not to go even more insane then I already am.

Keep Busy

Try to make at least one thing a week that you would be looking forward to. If you cant go out with anyone go out on your own: go shopping or just go to the park for a bit. By keeping busy it will distract you, even if that is just for an hour or two. Its an hour or two that you wouldn't be spending thinking about things you don't want to. When you are in the house be constructive, do a painting, make a sculpture, bake, work out, play video games, whatever it may be that works for you, do it.
Set a goal

If you set yourself a goal for over the summer you will have something to focus on. Whether that is to learn a new skill (like I want to learn French), to study for a subject you aren't too great at, to research something you are interested in or to create a short story. If you have that goal and you achieve it, whether that is literally just eating an apple every day when the holidays are over you will feel accomplished-to be honest that is an amazing feeling.

Don't keep your feelings in

I made the mistake of doing this the other day and lets just say it didn't end very well. The summer holidays are the worst time to hold your feelings in as its the time when you are most alone, you don't have school, you don't have work, there aren't many people around to distract you. When you get those bad feelings do something constructive with them- write a song, draw, dance, do whatever is best for you to get your feelings out.

One thing I want you all to do is to smile, even if you don't feel happy, just smile once a day as it can lighten your mood. No one deserves to feel depressed, but apparently happiness is easier to find then you think. You just have to realise that you deserve it, tell yourself that you deserve it, even if you don't think you do. Thank you for reading.
